Pretty Girl - Part II

Our horse for the day on Wednesday, 21 May 2008

David: Surry Hills Australia

Pretty Girl was meant to go to Perth to live with the station owner, but somehow she ended up in Alice Springs in a yard of over 200 horses that were to be shipped off for slaughter. She lucked out…being friendly she did not get onto the trucks as easily as the other horses and she and one other mare simply did not fit, and were left there with all of the foals. When I found out about the situation I did everything I could to get her and the others to Sydney, where they became celebrities of sorts for the Australian wild horses. The other horses all found homes, and I kept Pretty Girl who eventually gave birth to a beautiful bay filly we named Holly. (See more images and read comments…)

Pretty Girl - Part I

Our horse for the day on Tuesday, 20 May 2008

Newhaven Pretty Girl really has lived a charmed life, which began as a wild brumby foal on a station in the Australian Outback. While only weeks old, her mother died and Pretty Girl was found by the station owner dehydrated and laying beside her mothers body. He took pity on her and brought her home to be hand-raised.

Newhaven Jack

Our horse for the day on Monday, 05 May 2008

Newhaven Jack is a Waler gelding that was rescued from Newhaven Station in the Northern Territory. He was meant to travel to Perth when the sale of the station went through as he was the mate of the station owners favourite mare, Pretty Girl, whom he had hand-raised froma foal then returned to the wild. We are not sure how, but Pretty Girl and Jack were seperated and Pretty Girl was sent to Sydney, while Jack was supposedly sent to the abbatoir. Many months after this, they were reunited when Jack and some other stallions from Newhaven were found at an abbatoir in Windsor where he was purchased and brought to the same property as Pretty Girl.
